Jul 25: How to activate Facebook for iPad [UPDATE]

The iPad version of Facebooks iOS-App is actually already available and hidden inside the iPhone version as discovered by TechCrunch. Knowing this, every iPad user may already use this version on their device with a little trick. Here is a walkthrough how to activate the iPad interface on your device:

First of all you will need the free iPhone Explorer (download here). After that, follow these steps:

  • connect your iPad to your computer
  • install the iPhone version of the Facebook app on your iPad
  • fire up the downloaded iPhone Explorer; your connected iPad should be listed there
  • inside iPhone Explorer open the Facebook folder under "Apps"
  • navigate to the subfolder called "Facebook.app" and open it
  • copy the file "info.plist" to your desktop and open it (you may want to use TextWrangler or Xcode, both available for free on the Mac AppStore)
  • change the value of "UIDeviceFamily" to "2" (or download and use this info.plist)
  • copy "info.plist" back to your iPad via iPhone Explorer (replace the old version)
  • DONE
  • (you might have to reboot your device)

UPDATE: For those of you who don’t get it to work, try this:

  • delete the facebook app from your iPad and reinstall it from the app store or via iTunes
  • after that follow my instructions from above and keep the info.plist on your desktop
  • after you have copied the modified info.plist back to the iPad, reboot it
  • after the reboot the app should crash everytime you try to launch it
  • now change the value in the info.plist file on your desktop back to 1 and copy it again back to the iPad
  • that should do the trick
UPDATE 2: Seems like facebook has closed the door. Those who get the iPad version to work cannot log in. Same for me. Too bad...

#3.1 - Flo besagt:
25.07.2011 15:46 - (Antwort)

Maybe reboot your device or use the info.plist from the link above.

#3.1.1 - Nico 25.07.2011 15:55 - (Antwort)

I reboot the device multiple type.
I can't download you file on safari ... it always put me an .html at the end, and when i modify it, the file is not good.

Any idea ?

#3.2 - steve 25.07.2011 17:03 - (Antwort)

Same here.

#4 - Lino 25.07.2011 15:48 - (Antwort)

I've the same problem of @Antwort

#5 - badcrumble 25.07.2011 15:49 - (Antwort)

I don't think it works if you're running the iOS 5 beta.

#5.1 - Flo besagt:
25.07.2011 15:50 - (Antwort)

No, it works just fine on my iPad 2 running iOS 5 beta 4.

#6 - Menhir 25.07.2011 15:57 - (Antwort)

Same issue here as Nico and badcrumble. Running iOS 5 Beta 4. Tried reboot, tried Xcode file changes, and also downloaded the info.plist from here. Same black flash and back to home screen.

I've been having the exact same issue with he HBOGO app since I installed iOS 5, so maybe related?

#6.1 - sfasfsdfads 25.07.2011 15:59 - (Antwort)

I get the same results on 4.3.3 and 5 beta 4. Black screen and no worky.

#7 - Henrik 25.07.2011 15:58 - (Antwort)

Doesn't work for me. Even downloaded your plist file, but same result. iOS 5 Beta 4

#8 - Anonym 25.07.2011 16:02 - (Antwort)

Perhaps someone could post a working copy of the edited app that isn't logged in to anyone's account?

#9 - Anon 25.07.2011 16:04 - (Antwort)

App crashes when you launch it

#10 - Nico 25.07.2011 16:12 - (Antwort)

By the way, i'm with an iPad 1 ... maybe that's the problem ?

#10.1 - Flo besagt:
25.07.2011 16:15 - (Antwort)

I guess not. It should be running fine on both iPads. I'm trying to figure out why it works for some people and for others not...

#10.1.1 - Nico 25.07.2011 16:29 - (Antwort)

Thanks ... that would be great ! :)

#10.1.2 - Henrik 25.07.2011 16:36 - (Antwort)

Even when changing back device in plist to 1 from 2, it crashes, maybe that's some help in your search

#10.1.3 - Henrik 25.07.2011 16:44 - (Antwort)

Actually, even just using iPhone Explorer and putting the exact same info.plist that has been re-saved using TextWrangler causes a crash. I think the issue is either iPhone Explorer or TextWrangler!

#10.1.3.1 - R. 25.07.2011 16:52 - (Antwort)

This happens for me, as well, whether I use text wrangler or Xcode.

#10.1.3.1.1 - Henrik 25.07.2011 17:01 - (Antwort)

Simply using iPhone Explorer to move the original info.plist from the iPad onto your desktop and then move it back and replace the original with the moved original causes a crash.

So, iPhone Explorer is faulty?

#10.1.3.1.1.1 - R. 25.07.2011 17:05 - (Antwort)

I wouldn't say that for a certainty -- seems to work for other people so there may be some other variable involved, no?

#10.1.3.1.1.2 - Henrik 25.07.2011 17:06 - (Antwort)

Actually, no it only crashed once and worked after I pressed the app twice. So it narrows the crash down to TextWrangler and Xcode saving the info.plist faulty?

#11 - Simon besagt:
25.07.2011 16:13 - (Antwort)

Tried rebooting, and uninstalling and logging in first as per instructions for jailbroken iPad.
Just keeps crashing

#12 - sam 25.07.2011 16:45 - (Antwort)

The crash logs I’m seeing in the console in Xcode suggest the app doesn’t have a valid signature, could that be the issue?

#13 - Xbut 25.07.2011 16:46 - (Antwort)

Is there a specific version of the iOS that needs to be running? perhaps .4.4... because i have 4.3.3 and it crashes... do I need to update to 4.4.4?

#14 - Elijah besagt:
25.07.2011 16:52 - (Antwort)

The screen-shot of the plist file you are showing us and the one you provided are different in code. It could be that you have a different one running that was not corrupted.

#15 - Flo besagt:
25.07.2011 17:46 - (Antwort)

I have added some more instructions. Please try the additional steps and give feedback if that works for you!

#15.1 - Findefuchs 25.07.2011 18:05 - (Antwort)

#15.1.1 - Gaga 25.07.2011 18:14 - (Antwort)

Danke für den Tip! Bekomme aber jetzt auch den Verbindungsfehler..

#15.2 - Simon besagt:
25.07.2011 18:06 - (Antwort)

Thank you. Yes you're correct, oddly the instructions now make the app launch instead of crashing. However, I'm unable to login despite carefully entering credentials 3x.

#15.2.1 - Flo besagt:
25.07.2011 18:08 - (Antwort)

I can confirm that. I am currently unable to login as well. Maybe facebook has closed the door...

#16 - xbut 25.07.2011 17:55 - (Antwort)

Keeps crashing... I believe the download link to the .plist hasn't changed, could you give us a link to a working plist? this

#17 - Xbut 25.07.2011 18:02 - (Antwort)

Please disregard my message,.. i didnt see the updates...

Thank you Flo

#18 - Scott 25.07.2011 18:06 - (Antwort)

The latest updated instructions from 16:52 have no effect whatsoever. App still crashes immediately. Followed instructions to the T.

#19 - Brian 25.07.2011 18:08 - (Antwort)

Same here...still doesn't work

#20 - CDB 25.07.2011 18:09 - (Antwort)

Updated instructions worked a treat for me... almost. Says it cannot connect to facebook at the moment.

Might sound like a noob but.... have they/can they blocked the app?

#20.1 - Flo besagt:
25.07.2011 18:11 - (Antwort)

Maybe. I'm currently having the same issue.

#20.1.1 - Nico 25.07.2011 18:20 - (Antwort)

Same here

#20.2 - Simon besagt:
25.07.2011 18:17 - (Antwort)

Oh sooo close too! Rebooted and noticed it reverted back to iPhone app so logged in there, then repeated plist process again. Got back to iPad app and breifly I was in, but then threw me back to login screen in iPad mode. Just can't login when in iPad mode! App not crashing though anymore.

#21 - Kyle 25.07.2011 18:11 - (Antwort)

No change, still just keeps crashing.

#22 - CDB 25.07.2011 18:12 - (Antwort)

Sorry about the double post

#23 - MBO 25.07.2011 18:16 - (Antwort)

Didn't work for me. But when I played around and copied my iPhone's info file, unedited, to my ipad I was brought to a new log in screen. However, it wouldn't accept my user name and pasword so I assume it is being blocked.

#24 - Nico 25.07.2011 18:18 - (Antwort)

I have some improvement with the new method.
The application doesn't crash anymore and i get the new login screen in full screen.

But i have a new problem now.
I can't login on the iPad app ... i have the message "Connection failed try again later".

I uninstall the app once more, login on the iPhone version, then do you tutorial, but same message.

Anyone else ?

#24.1 - Simon besagt:
25.07.2011 18:20 - (Antwort)

Confirmed. New instructions prevent app from crashing, but can't login :(

#25 - Anonym 25.07.2011 18:21 - (Antwort)

I reboot the iPad for the login problem issue, but it revert backs the App to the iPhone App :(
You think we have to do that every time ?

#26 - Flo besagt:
25.07.2011 18:21 - (Antwort)

Seems like facebook has closed the door. Those who get the iPad version to work cannot log in. Same for me. Too bad...

#27 - Andy 25.07.2011 18:21 - (Antwort)

"Unable to connect to Facebook. Please try again later."

Can access facebook.com through safari fine. Wonder if fb have disabled access?

#28 - Xbut 25.07.2011 18:22 - (Antwort)

It is still crashing for me after many tries, reboots and everything, has anyone one done anything a bit different than the instructions and it worked? Im following instructions to the T and nothing

#29 - Henrik 25.07.2011 18:23 - (Antwort)

I just get the normal facebook iPhone app using your new method?

#30 - Nick Marshall besagt:
25.07.2011 18:37 - (Antwort)

No go for me here as well. Tried the instructions with the previous version of the Facebook app, updated to the new one, rebooted/removed app, updated to latest iOS build. Still crashes the app, whether I revert back to 1 or 2 -- same difference.

Since Facebook closed the door anyway, might as well call it quits.

It works great here reverting to number 1 with iPhone explorer but I cannot login, anybody solved this login problem?

#32 - Fabian besagt:

Those of you who it's not working for, are you on Lion or on Snow Leopard? Might that have something to do with it?

I'm on Lion and it's not working for me.

#32.1 - Nico 25.07.2011 19:48 - (Antwort)

I'm on Lion and i get it work ... but "Marc & Friends" closed the door.

#32.1.1 - Flo besagt:

#32.1.1.1.1 - Nico 25.07.2011 20:06 - (Antwort)

Not anymore.
Apparently they have closed the door.

#33 - Blizaine 25.07.2011 19:56 - (Antwort)

dang, almost thought I had it. I started with a fresh FB app download on the iPad. Logged into it FIRST. Then did the steps. When I opened it I briefly saw the iPad FB interface and timeline then it logged me out :(

#34 - Frank 25.07.2011 20:31 - (Antwort)

I had the same problem to login but what I did is re-install the iPhone version, Login into Facebook.
then redid your instruction and it work.

Search for FaceForward in Cydia.

It enables it again!

#37 - Kbut 26.07.2011 15:07 - (Antwort)

Just for all to know TextWrangler is the issue, do it via Xcode and in UIInterface, do not delete one, just add another item and in the value field put 2.

Also, change the type in both items from string to number,,,
